Hattie Maria Payne , affectionately known as "Grandma," departed this life on April 18, 2024, at Bon Secour Hospital in Petersburg, Virginia. Hattie was born in Halifax County, Virginia, on December 13, 1987.
Hattie was raised in Boydton, Virginia. She attended Bluestone Senior High School, graduating in the class of 2006. Hattie was baptized and attended Saint Paul's Baptist Church from an early age. Hattie was hardworking, being employed at RBS, Jones Apparel, Inc., and Global Safety Textile. She loved her family unconditionally, especially the children, and she enjoyed every minute spent with them. Hattie was the glue that kept everyone together. She was a no-nonsense person who was definitely going to make you laugh. She enjoyed the fish table and cooking to the fullest.
Hattie was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Walter and Helen Evans; paternal grandparents, Donald and Mabel Payne and Richard (Annie Helen) Alexander; and her daddy, Michael Nelson.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her daughter, Na'Santi Brooks; mother, Yvonne Payne; father, Kenneth (Alicia) Payne; three brothers, Derrick Payne, Dezman Payne, and De'Quan Payne; one sister, Seniah Payne; three stepsisters, Alicia Pratt, MeeMee Pratt, and DeeDee Pratt; ten cousins who were more like siblings, Melinda Baskerville, Franklin Alexander, Jr., Main Evans, Komiko Alexander, Ra'Hiem Davis, Deli'Andre' Alexander, Al'Terek Evans, Fu'Quan Davis, Da'Von Evans, and Ky'Shawn Stewart; eight uncles, Wendell (Gracie) Richardson, Donald (JoAnn) Payne, Clinton (Zeda) Evans, David (Beatrice) Evans, Walter Jr., and Freddie Evans, and Richard and Derick Alexander; six aunts, Annie Lee Baskerville, Dale Evans, Julia Alexander, Lucinda Simmons, Linette Finn, and Hope Alexander; three nieces, Ny'Ema Jefferson, Kassidy Payne, and Tre'Sjor Hill; two best friends, Shadika Waller and Cassandra Winkler; devoted caregiver, Junnie Evans; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral Service for Ms. Hattie Maria Payne will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 11 A.M. at Saint Paul's Baptist Church, 595 Jefferson Street, Boydton, VA. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing will begin on Friday, April 26, 2024 from 2:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M.
