Nannie Mae Watson was born on February 18, 1941, in Charlotte County, Virginia. She was the second child of four born to the late Bennie Staten, Sr., and Jannie B. Staten. She departed this earthly life on Sunday, December 17, 2023, at the age of 82.
She received her education at Thyne Elementary and West End High in Mecklenburg County and had joined First Baptist Church in Wylliesburg, Virginia, at an early age. Nannie met the love of her life in 1956, Edward Watson, Sr., and she married her soulmate on February 28, 1959. Their marriage of over 65 years and they joined the Mount Mitchell Baptist Church. To this union, six children were born.
Nannie was a hard worker; she worked on the farm, she worked at Jobil for ten years, then she went to Burlington and worked for 18 years until they shut down. Also, she drove the school bus for Mecklenburg County Schools in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, for over ten years. She also loved cooking and going to games and cheering her boys on with the cow bell.
She was preceded in death by her father, Bennie Staten, Sr.; mother, Jannie B. Staten; father-in-law, James B. Watson; and mother-in-law, Ola C. Watson.
She leaves to cherish: her husband, Edward Watson, Sr.; two sons, Edward Watson, Jr., of Chase City, VA, and Stanley S. Watson (Coresa) of Wake Forest, NC; four daughters, Jannie Jenkins (David) of Henrico, VA, Wanda Watson, Sherry Saunders, and Vickie Jones, all of Chase City, VA; thirteen grandchildren and forty-two great-grandchildren; one sister, Emma Oliver of Chase City, VA; two brothers, Joseph Staten, Sr., of Chase City, VA, and Bennie Staten (Thelma) of Fort Mitchell, VA; ten sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law; one special aunt, Dorothy Staten; one special devoted friend, Landora Sanchez; one godson, Emmitt Searles; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral Service for Mrs. Nannie Mae Watson will be held on Friday, December 22, 2023 at 12 Noon at Mt. Mitchell Baptist Church, 475 Mt. Mitchell Road, Drakes Branch, VA. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing will begin on Thursday, December 21, 2023 from 2:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M.
